By the Glass:
Inama Vin Soave Classico 2007 ($9) - 100% Garganega, Veneto. Year after year Stefano Inama turns out an array of outstanding wines from the Veneto. His Soave Classico has a rounded nose with floral, nutty notes. The palate has lovely mineral-edged ripe fruit and fresh acidity. This is a delicious Soave in a rich, bold style.

By the Bottle:
Santa Barbara Verdicchio Le Vaglie 2007 ($49) - 100% Verdicchio, Marche. Awarded Tre Bicchiere by the Gambero Rosso guide to Italian wines, this wine is complex and full-bodied, comparable to a French white from southern Burgundy. It has great rich character, combined with food-friendly acid. The wine is mineral-driven with hints of citrus and pear. It's wonderful by itself as well as with food.

A hard drinker, being at table, was offered grapes at dessert. "Thank you," said he, pushing the dish away from him, "but I am not in the habit of taking my wine in pills."
Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

By the Glass:

Fontanafredda Barbera Briccotondo 2008 ($9) - 100% Barbera, Seralunga d'Alba. The grapes for this wine are grown on estate-owned vineyards located on hillsides in the Monferrato and Langhe region of Piemonte. It’s ruby-red in color with purple highlights. The nose is packed with black fruit, especially blackberries and plums, with slight spicy overtones hinting at black pepper and cinnamon. Sweet, soft tannins come together in a closely-woven texture that merges with the fruit, while a crisp freshness provides a long, tasty finish.

By the Bottle:

Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo 2007 ($50) - 100% Nebbiolo. Produttori del Barbaresco is a co-op located in the center of Barbaresco. 2007 was such a great year that they debated whether or not to make a Langhe Nebbiolo, since they easily could have bottled and sold it as Barbaresco. This wine is ripe and generous, with bright spicy aromas and deep red fruits. Six months of barrel aging have softened the tannins of this juicy, succulent red, yet not at the cost of its acidity. With hints of fresh-cut violets and anise on the nose and a palate brimming with ripe raspberry, cherry fruit and forest floor, this red possesses the elegance of a much pricier Piemonte offering. Gambero Rosso awarded it Due Bicchiere and rated it an an especially good value.
